海はひろいな 大きいな The Sea

昨日は祖母のお誕生日会でした。

I had my grandmother's birthday party yesterday.

私の大好きな祖母は習字の先生で、老人ホームで教えるボランティアもしています。

My dear grandmother teaches Japanese calligraphy in her house and some elderly nursing homes.

油拭きなどに使うため、書き損じやいらなくなった半紙をいつももらうのですが、その中に懐かしい歌がありました。

I use her used calligraphy paper for cleaning up cooking oil. One day, I found such nostalgic lyrics;

日本人ならほとんどの人が知っているであろう、「海」の歌詞です。

The lyrics of the song "Umi" (the sea) well known in Japan.

いつ覚えたかもわからないくらい馴染みのある曲ですが、それ故に歌詞の意味を考えた事などこの時までありませんでした。

I haven't thought about the meaning of the phrases, for it's so familiar as I don't know when I got to know the song.

月がのぼり日も沈む。それを抱えるほど海って大きかったんだ。そりゃ、すごい。

How wide the sea is... the moon rises from and the sun sinks into it.

海辺で育った私にはいつも心のふるさとだった海ですが、そんな風に考えた事はありませんでした。作った人（作詞：林柳波）、すごいな。

I have never conceived such a thing even I grew up near the sea. How wonderful the songwriter is.
